Under EU legislation, if a food contains or consists of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or contains ingredients produced from GMOs, this must be clearly indicated on the label. The GM Food and Feed Regulation (EC) No. 1829/2003 lays down rules to cover all GM food and animal feed, regardless of the presence of any genetically modified material in the finished product.
Deliberate use of GM ingredients at any level must be labelled. However, the regulation provides for a threshold for the adventitious, or accidental, presence of GM material in non-GM food or feed sources. This threshold is set at 0.9% and is only applicable for GMOs that have an EU authorisation. In addition to EU legislation, manufacturers of organic products may have to meet stringent standards regarding GMOs as set by their accreditation body.
Neogen Europe Ltd provide a laboratory service for analysis of GMOs in food and animal feed. We use PCR analysis techniques to determine the presence or absence of specific genes found in GMOs. Our testing services range from GMO screening packages to specific tests for identification and quantification. Selection of an appropriate GMO test will be influenced by a number of factors including product type, degree of processing, country of origin, previous results and expected GMO status of the material.
